Blast Off: Rocket Qualifies for World Championship Playoff

Baseball legend Roger Clemens will have a chance to add another World Championship to his resume Friday at TPC Myrtle Beach.

The 50-year-old Clemens, who pitched in a minor league game for the Sugar Land Skeeters last Saturday, won his flight in the 29th annual Golf.com World Amateur Handicap Championship, advancing to Friday’s World Championship Playoff at TPC Myrtle Beach.

Clemens recorded a net score of 210 (gross 234) over 54 holes at the World Am, good enough for a first place tie with Mike Williams of Clanton, Alabama in Flight 18 (mid-senior men, ages 50-59). All flight winners and ties advance to the Championship Playoff.

The World Am began on Monday with 3,100 golfers from 49 states and 25 countries competing for the right to be crowned World Champion. In his second tournament appearance, Clemens, an eight handicap, shot a net 65 at the Hackler Course to vault into the first place tie.

He shot a net 76 on opening day at Diamondback and a net 73 at TPC in the second round.

Clemens isn’t the first former professional athlete to play in the World Am. In recent years former Major League Baseball All-Star Tony Womack and NBA world champion Wes Matthews have competed in the tournament.

The World Am is a 72-hole event, but Clemens’ flight had play shortened to 54 holes because its scheduled Thursday course was to wet to play after a soggy week along the Grand Strand.

World Am participants are flighted based on gender, age and handicap index. The event’s inclusiveness is apparent in its past champions as winners with handicaps as low as three and as high as 34 have won. Five women have hoisted the championship trophy as well.

After each round of competition, players and their gues
