The 29th annual Golf.com World Amateur Handicap Championship will again crown its champion at one of the best and most respected Myrtle Beach golf courses.
For the third consecutive year, TPC Myrtle Beach, the area’s only 5-star course and the former host of the Senior PGA Tour Championship, will host the Flight Winner’s Playoff.
“TPC Myrtle Beach is one of the best courses in America and has been an ideal venue for the Flight Winner’s Playoff,” said Jeff Monday, the Golf.com World Am tournament director. “The course provides a challenging test and the facilities, for players and spectators, are superb.”
The Flight Winner’s Playoff will be held on August 31, the culmination of the World Am, a 72-hole, net stroke play event that attracts more than 3,000 participants from across the globe.
A Tom Fazio design, TPC is a par 72 layout that plays 6,950 yards from the tips, a distance World Am players won’t play from, but the layout is formidable from any of its four sets of tees.
The home course of PGA Tour star and Myrtle Beach golf spokesman Dustin Johnson, TPC is one of fewer than 20 layouts nationwide that earned 5 stars in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play” guide.
“It’s a great golf course,” Johnson, a five-time PGA Tour winner, said of the layout. “It’s always in great shape. The course is always manicured very nicely. It’s a tough golf course. You hit every club in your bag. You’ve got to hit a lot of different shots. Any time you can challenge yourself, that’s a good thing.”
The World Am attracts players from all 50 states and more than 25 foreign countries. All golfers – men, women, the young and old – are welcome to compete in the event, which flights players by age, gender and handicap before bringing all flight winners together for the final round shootout at TPC.
The World Am has thrived due in large part to the game’s most aggressive handicap monitoring system, which allows players to compete on a level playing field. Bobby Perkinson, a 3.5 handicap from Tennessee, is the defending champion.
Half the fun of the World Am occurs off the course. Each night, participants gather at the World’s Largest 19th Hole to enjoy a golf expo, live entertainment, free food and drinks, and some of the biggest names in the game. David Feherty has headlined the 19th Hole entertainment the last two years and Charlie Rymer and Dave Pelz are regulars on the main stage.
